Hansen hangs on for fifth Sooner Late Model victory

John Rittenoure - ENID, Okla. (July 29, 2023) - After a rough start due to a lap 1 yellow for a back stretch crash and another delay on lap 3, the Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series presented by Hayden Ross Motorsports Foundation got underway and Brett Hansen found his rhythm.

The 2022 Sooner Rookie of the Year took command and powered to his fifth victory of the season Saturday at Enid Speedway.

It was no easy run for Hansen who had Jon Herring, Jr. on his tail most of the way. Herring, making his first Sooner Series start of the season, started fifth and immediately moved to fourth. Herring drove from fourth to second on lap 9 and reeled in Hansen. On lap 15 Herring came within 0.033 seconds of passing Hansen, but failed to make the pass. Two laps from the finish Hansen had to work through lapped traffic in turns 1-2 and Herring again pulled up on Hansen’s bumper. However, Hansen held on to win by a 0.262 second margin.

Kip Hughes started 14th and charged through the field taking over third on lap 18, but could not get any closer. However, the 11 position climb through the field earned Hughes the Marks Machine Shop Hard Charger award. Joseph Gorby managed to finish fourth after a rough start, and Damian Patocka rounded out the top five.

Pit Notes:

Eli Ross, was running second then fell to third on lap 4 finally dropping out on lap 8 ending what looked like a promising night after winning the second heat race.

Patocka, who races under car number 229, raced with a retro wrap on his car Saturday. Patocka honored past Enid late model racer and Hutchinson Nationals champion Ted Shepard with his wrap of the number 12 Shepard late model.

Hughes was also racing retro with a red wrap and the number 60 honoring his dad David Hughes.
