Hansen, Choate, Elliott, Goldman pick up opening night wins

by John Rittenoure - ENID, Okla. (April 2, 2022) - Brett Hansen is just in his first year of racing with the Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series, and after just three events he has made his presence known.

After winning on March 26 at Thunderbird Speedway, Hansen followed that up with another convincing victory Saturday at Enid Speedway.

Starting outside front row virtue of the redraw, Hansen gunned his late model around pole sitter Adam Popp at the drop of the green and roared into the early lead. Hansen flew around the 3/8’s mile oval unchallenged in the 25-lapper for his second victory of the season.

However, the race behind him was intense with Hayden Ross of Muskogee charging toward the front. Ross moved from fifth to fourth on lap 2 and then passed Dustin Allen for third on lap 3. On lap 14 Ross battled past Popp for second and set out after Hansen.

But Ross had to duel with four-time defending champion Kip Hughes late in the race for the runner-up spot. Hughes started 10th and was mounting a charge of his own moving into third on lap 15. The two were door handle to door handle on the final lap and contact was made as the pair crossed the finish line in a photo finish. Hughes spun and rolled backwards toward turn one to finish third behind Ross. The transponder scoring system had Ross picking up second by 0.138 seconds. Popp held on to fourth over fifth place finisher Kaleb Roach by 0.523 seconds.

J.D. Choate cruised to victory in the season opening factory stock feature. Robert Elliott led the way in the Sport Mods, and Jaytn Goldman out dueled David Wagner in the Hot Shot feature.
